  • New Mexico Counseling Association (NMCA)

    The New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department (NMRLD)

    • The Counseling and Therapy Practice Board is administratively attached to the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department (NMRLD), and responsibility of day-to-day operations are managed by staff within the Department’s Boards and Commissions Division. Any counselor or therapist in the state of New Mexico needs.

    • In order to practice the profession of counseling and therapy in New Mexico, NMRLD provides clear eligibility criteria that individuals must meet such as education, examination, and other experience required by law. Individuals licensed by The Counseling and Therapy Practice Board must maintain professional competencies and continuing education in order to renew their license. Violations of statute or rules, including unprofessional conduct or practicing beyond the scope of licensure, may result in disciplinary action by the board, up to and including revocation of a license.   • NMRLD Counseling and Therapy Practice Board acknowledges 4 independently licensed designations for mental health professionals:  

    Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC)

    Licensed Professional Art Therapy (LPAT)

    Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (LADAC)

     Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)

    Often, these five occupations are referred to as Mental Health and Counseling Professions in New Mexico legislation.

    Other mental health professional designations (social work, psychologists etc) are regulated separate from NMRLD Counseling and Therapy Practice.
