Learning Objectives

Objective #1 : Practical and compassionate knowledge of neurocognitive disorders and how these changes can affect an elder’s daily life. Understand how much the ageist and ableist attitudes can cause stumbling blocks for elders facing memory issues. See how these attitudes cause
interventions that both limit freedom and are also not effective in a practical sense.

Objective #2: Learn how to create supported independence and help elders function better in daily life. Discuss the concept of healing through community and the complex needs of elders and
caregivers throughout the disease process. Problem solve ethical and boundary issues that arise from supporting elders with neurocognitive disorders and their caregivers. Discuss the complexities of the caregiving relationship.

Objective #3: Shift toward a vision of care that embraces the human being instead of just the disease process. Create an ethics based structure that supports engagement with the community at
large while respecting the rights of the individual.
