Building Stronger Families in New Mexico with Functional Family Therapy

The New Mexico Health Care Authority (HCA) has implemented enhanced Medicaid rates for qualified behavioral health providers for the following evidence-based practices (EBPs).

FFT Partners is thrilled to join forces with The Center of Innovation for Behavioral Health and Wellbeing (COI) and the State of New Mexico to expand access to evidence-based behavioral health practices across the state. Together, they are working to bring hope, healing, and stronger futures to families.

Why Families Need Functional Family Therapy (FFT)

Families today face real challenges—substance use, systemic inequities, and the stress of navigating child welfare or juvenile justice involvement. What they need is more than support; they need a proven pathway forward.

That’s where Functional Family Therapy (FFT) comes in. FFT is an evidence-based treatment that helps families overcome barriers, rebuild trust, and develop resilience. With 12–20 sessions over just a few months, FFT offers a short-term, high-impact approach that has been proven to reduce substance use, risky behaviors, and conflict—while strengthening relationships.

Tailored to New Mexico Communities

FFT is not a one-size-fits-all model. Its strength lies in its adaptability. In New Mexico, FFT is being implemented with careful attention to the state’s diverse cultural, linguistic, and community needs. Each family’s voice is central to treatment decisions, ensuring that care is both evidence-based and deeply personal.

Clinicians trained in FFT learn to:

  • Go beyond empathy and actively collaborate with families.

  • Honor cultural values and community strengths.

  • Directly address challenges like substance use, conflict, or risky behaviors.

  • Build resilience and long-term family stability.
